The Discovery Channel is a wonderful resource for homeschooling families. I’m sure you have either used or plan to use videos and documentaries put out by the Discovery Channel. Did you also know that they offer free lesson plans, worksheets, virtual “trips” and lots more on their website? If you aren’t already using this resource, you have got to check it out!
The lesson plans are split into three different age groups: Elementary, Middle and High. Elementary lesson plans cover grades K through 5, Middle covers 6 through 8 and High is 9 through 12. Once you select an age group, you will be able to choose from a list of subjects available. Alternatively, you can also search by topic. They offer the following subjects:
- Arts and Literature
- Social Studies
You can even find virtual field trips! Right now there is one scheduled for April 18th to a working egg farm, so children can learn how the eggs they eat come to the table. It’s all part of the “The Good Egg Project”, and you can find more info and register here.
The free lesson plans offered by Discovery offer many different resources. If you look at this one on Akhenaton, you can see that they provide the following:
- Materials (listing what books are required)
- Procedures (these are just the activities)
- Discussion Questions
- Suggested Readings
- Academic Standards
It’s perfect! Hours would have spent putting that together if we had to do it on our own!
